You can see tow trucks everywhere on a daily basis, hauling and pulling other vehicles to safer places. Although the basic function of all types of tow trucks is the same but there are various types of tow trucks for towing different vehicles. Here are three main types of tow trucks and their functions:
Flatbed tow truck
A flatbed tow truck is also known as a slide. They are sometimes referred to as the “rollback” trucks. This is the best choice for most of the towing companies. The flatbed tow truck comes with a long empty truck bed which has a flat top. It has a hydraulic system in place which allows moving the flat bed up and down. This makes loading of cars easier as the driver can just drive the car onto the ramp. When the vehicle is set, the hydraulics even out the ramp so that the truck can move with the car. This is one of the most convenient ways of towing a car as it does not involve dragging the vehicle.
Hook and chain tow truck
The hook and chain tow trucks are not so often used today. The vehicle is towed with only two wheels on the ground. The reason is that they drag the vehicles and their designs often damage the bumpers and front ends of the vehicle. They are only used to drag the junk cars around. The hook and chain tow truck work by looping chains around the vehicle frame that is drawn aloft by a boom winch. With the use of hook and chain tow trucks, the risk of damage to the vehicles is too high and so most of the towing companies opt for the other options that are available.
Wheel-lift tow truck
Wheel-lift tow trucks are similar to the hook and chain tow truck, but they cause a little less damage. The only difference between the two types of tow trucks is that the hook and chain tow truck uses chains, and the wheel-lift tow truck uses a metal yoke. The metal yoke hooks under the front wheels of the vehicle that is to be towed. While the vehicle is towed, the hydraulic lift suspends the front side of the vehicle to lift it from the ground. This reduces the potential damage to the car.
You can choose from any of the above-mentioned types of tow trucks based on your requirement. Before you buy a tow truck, you should consult a heavy duty truck dealer so that you will be able to make a good choice.
