Various types of compactors are available on the market to achieve various benefits. Some compactors are designed to compact soil, while the others are designed to compress raw materials for transport or storage. The basic difference between the various types of compactors is the size. Some compactors are small in size while the others are exceptionally large. Small ones are used to compact soil or other material in smaller places. Large compactors have large rollers that compact materials.
Here are the different types of compactors that are used in construction sites:
Vibrating road roller
This compactor is large and a heavy duty equipment. These vibrators come in two types – smooth drum and pad foot drum. The smooth drum compactors generate three forces: impact, vibration and static forces. The pad foot drum compactors also generate the same forces along with the manipulative forces. One great thing about vibrating road rollers is that they provide uniform compaction throughout the lift.
Tamping foot compactors
Tamping foot compactors are self-propelled, high-speed, non-vibratory compactors. They come with four padded steel wheels and are equipped with a dozer blade. These type of compactors are effective on all soils except clean sand. They leave a fairly smooth, sealed surface so that the hauling units are able to maintain a high speed when traveling over the fill. Tamping foot compactors are the best choice for larger projects.
Wheeled compactors are the largest type of compactors available on the market. These compactors have steel wheels with 30-40 spikes. As the heavy duty equipment moves, every spike enters the ground. These compactors are extremely heavy and are used to compact landfill debris and loose top soil to prepare the surface for concrete.
Plate compactors are used for tight spaces and surface areas that are very small. This equipment is usually used to compact base rock that is present below the surfaces that are paved with stone. They can also be useful to compact bricks in order to flatten the surfaces and make them suitable for vehicles and pedestrians.
Pneumatic tired rollers
Pneumatic tired rollers are also known as rubber tired rollers. These type of compactors are used for compaction of coarse-grained soils. They are least suitable for uniform coarse rocks and soils. They are generally used in pavement sub grade works. They come with wheels on both the axles. They compact soil layers with uniform pressure throughout the width of the roller.
If you have been looking for a compactor, you should first determine what you will be using it for and accordingly check out the various models available. This way, you will be able to find the best heavy duty equipment that suits your needs.
