Over the years, technology in the forestry industry has evolved considerably. This has made various forest-related tasks such as cutting, logging, hauling, skidding, etc. easier. Take a look at different modern day types of forestry equipment.
Delimber is used to remove big branches from trees that have already been cut. The delimber assembly is mounted on on a tracked excavator with the help of powerful hydraulics. The pull-through type is the latest and most commonly used delimber. Trees were pulled through the delimber by a knuckleboom loader. This heavy duty equipment has a set of delimbing knives mounted on a frame that completely removes the limbs from trees.
The process of moving or transporting chopped trees and logs from the cutting site (forest) to another landing place is called skidding. A skidder is a heavy duty equipment used for skidding and pulling the trees, branches, and logs out of the forest. The modern types of skidders are the clambunk skidder (with top-opening hydraulic jaws and has better traction), cable skidder (with a cable that is reeled out and attached to the chained pulling mechanism), and grapple skidder (with a hydraulic grapple bucket).
A buncher or feller buncher is a type of forestry equipment used for logging operations. This heavy duty equipment can quickly gather and cut several trees before felling or de-rooting them. This motorized and tracked equipment has a tree-grabbing device containing a circular saw. The machine also has a pinching device designed to cut small trees at the base. The cut trees are then loaded or stacked for the next procedures such as skidding and bucking.
A harvester is a type of forest equipment that has a complex mechanism and is used for cut-to-length logging operations for felling, delimbing, and other processes. A harvester is generally used along with with a forwarder, which moves the logs and trees to the landing place after the harvester is done with logging. This equipment is used for clearcutting the forest to a steep terrain. A harvester is built on a robust terrain vehicle which could be wheeled or tracked, or a Walking Excavator.
A forwarder is another equipment used for transporting trees and cut logs from the cutting site in the forest to the landing place. But unlike a skidder which drags the trees, logs, and limbs along the ground, it moves them off the ground, in a carriage. The only disadvantage of this equipment is that it can carry a limited size of logs. The Forwarder is used along with a harvester in cut-to-length logging operations.
